The Outdoor Schoolhouse seeks passionate and creative applicants for a Part-time Lead Teacher to work with 1 1/2 to 8-year-olds starting in the fall of 2017. Located in beautiful Boyds, MD, adjacent to Black Hill Park, The Outdoor Schoolhouse's highly trained faculty is committed to creating a learning environment that nurtures the whole child and celebrates each child in a warm and supportive environment. Classes take place almost entirely outdoors, are child led, with a heavy emphasis on inquiry and the arts. Applicants with experience with emergent curriculum, child led inquiry, forest/nature schools, Reggio Emilia philosophy, or the arts will be given preference. Our program runs Tuesdays 9:30-3:30 and Thursdays 9:30-1:30. Teachers should plan to come a half hour early and stay a half hour after classes.
Responsibilities: The Lead Teacher will be responsible for developing and teaching nature-based, developmentally appropriate, programming following the children's interests. The Lead Teacher is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of all children in the group. He/she will be helping to create a welcoming family environment and effectively communicating with parents and families individually and in groups including newsletters, emails, parent/teacher conferences, and social events.
Education and Experience: * Minimum High school diploma, certificate of high school equivalency, but preference to applicants with a Bachelor's or Master's *Minimum 1 year of experience working with preschoolers in an approved setting (licensed child care center, nursery school, church operated school, recreation and parks program, registered family child care home or similar setting or 1 year of college (30 semester hours), but preference to applicants with 3 years or more lead teaching experience, particularly in an emergent curriculum setting. * Must be willing to meet the requirements for "Family Child Care Teacher Caring for Infants and Toddlers" listed in the document linked before JANUARY 2018 (assistance can be provided). http://earlychildhood.marylandpublicschools.org/system/files/filedepot/3/maryland_large_family_child_care_home_-_staff_requirements.pdf * Commitment to lifelong learning- Extensive knowledge of and experience with one or more of the following: emergent curriculum, child led inquiry, forest/nature schools, Reggio Emilia philosophy, or the arts * Candidates with unique interests and skills like hiking experience, naturalists, gardening, yoga, music, singing, art, handwork, storytelling, and experience working internationally, etc. highly encouraged
Special Requirements: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls; Must have physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine; Significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and repetitive motions; Ability to move furniture at least weekly (50-75 pounds) and to carry and lift children (30–60 pounds) several times each day.
